When I was recently taping my book, Celebrate Your Life! The Art of Celebrating Every Day, for audio release, I realized that reading aloud is singularly the most effective way to proof any document. This is particularly true if you are proofing your own work, a near impossible task! We tend to read what we have written despite what is actually appearing on the page and hence we will miss subtle mistakes in spelling and punctuation. Reading aloud forces us to pay attention to spelling and punctuation. I have also found that while the written word can be differently constructed, often reading aloud will point out weak areas that are unclear or word choices that are complex and convoluted and don’t need to be. Having just released my manual The Manual for Life Success, I put it through the same rigorous testing and am delighted with the result.
