Facebook is once again going through growing pains, this time it is all about ditching “fans” and instead going to a “like” button. Since we are already used to “liking” posts it seems a natural fit to carry that feeling forward to pages. Fans always did seem a bit contrived and the noise FB received eventually created a change.
But that’s not all! Now, you can find that same FB Like button on thousands of other sites across the internet. It is entirely similar to the share feature, but somehow they have taken it farther and are positioning themselves to be the next DIGG or Twitter.
The biggest change that you need to be aware of is that when you like a page, it will show up on your profile wall, just as if you like a post. There is virtually no difference and that means that you can have a real impact on the visibility and popularity of a page by “liking” it and by deciding which ones will show up on your profile as icons/badges.
Now you know I am not a tech so I’m going share some in depth on this with you, that I subscribe to. If you want to know the nuts and bolts and have it illustrated clearly, check out the post here http://www.wchingya.com/2010/04/facebook-like-button.html. I was impressed because I checked out FB support on this and couldn’t make head or tails of what they were sharing but this post clears it right up.
