In the basics of business mindset you’ll either have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. The exciting part about this is that because of something called neuroplasticity, you can retrain your brain to be what you want. So if you’re struggling with a fixed mindset, you have the capability to rewire your brain to a growth mindset.
Before I dive into that, I want you to read through the three types of interior designer business mindset here. Be honest with your self assessment and determine which type most looks and feels like you. (Remember, you can change this! But you can’t improve on what you won’t admit.)
No Way Nadine & Nate
Nadine and Nate have a negative mindset that is keeping them trapped and playing small in their business. They look for what’s wrong, instead of what’s right. They see only problems, instead of solutions. They are quick to point out why something won’t work instead of seeing the potential.
They are also active on Facebook in the forums complaining about bad clients, whining about not earning enough, and generally blaming everything outside of themselves for how their business is performing (or not as is most often the case with a negative outlook.)
They are more committed to staying in their nest of negativity and limiting beliefs than they are to growth and success. They’ll make a lot of noise about chasing solutions, but they won’t focus enough to experience true results and growth. They are committed to staying in spin and blaming everything and everyone around them for their circumstances.

Fearful Fiona and Frank
Fiona and Frank aren’t fully negative but they are filled with fear about taking necessary steps to move forward. They see everything unfamiliar as a huge risk and are genuinely frightened of doing what’s necessary to achieve the results they dream of.
Their business mindset is fixed, though slightly more open than Nadine and Nate. When they get past their fear, they are able to make great strides and experience growth and success.
They are caught in a place where they feel more committed to their fears than to achieving their big goals. Their business mindset hinders their success until they can overcome their fears or find a way to push through them to achievement.
What are you committed to?
Committed Cathy and Carson
Cathy and Carson have an interior design business mindset that is growth based. They look for what’s working, and see solutions to every problem. They are at their creative best and open to innovation and possibility at every turn.
They know that their big goals are achievable with the right strategies, the best support and guidance, and focused efforts. They approach challenges with curiosity and a can do spirit. When an obstacle shows up, they find a way to go around it, blast through it, or climb over it. They don’t allow themselves to be stopped by limiting beliefs.
They are more committed to where they are going and their big goals than to where they are and any perceived roadblocks to success. They tackle problems with creativity and seek outside expertise to get where they want to go. It’s not easy, but they stay course because they know the reward is totally worth it.

What’s Your Self-Assessment?
So where are you on the spectrum of interior designer business mindset? Are you trapped with Nadine and Nate in negativity and no way, no how? Are you feeling fearful and hanging out with Fiona and Frank? Or are you committed to the necessary action to achieve your big dreams like Cathy and Carson?
There are designers in each mindset bucket. The Nadines and Nates don’t move forward, they are uncoachable, and they remain trapped in their negative spin. They’ll attempt lots of solutions and coaches, and blame each one for their unsatisfying results. The truth is they are committed to failure not to success. THAT SUCKS!
The Fionas and Franks can experience remarkable results when they will put their fear on a back burner (you can always go back to it) and step forward with support, guidance, and direction to achieve their big goals. They will feel fear along the path, and can start dismantling their limiting beliefs and move toward a growth mindset with even small wins that lead to big results.
What You’re Really Afraid Of…
Remember that the extraordinary Zig Ziglar said “fear is False Evidence Appearing Real.” And he was right. Fear is imagined, it isn’t real. The only two fears we’re born with are the fear of falling and the fear of loud sounds. We aren’t born with a fear of success, that’s learned. What is learned can be unlearned.
Very few people are truly afraid of failure because that’s what drives many to succeed. Instead it’s the fear of success that stops you from achieving big goals, you struggle to feel it, envision it, and therefore attain it. You can learn how to change that and achieve every goal you have.
Your Success Will Land You in the 2%
Are you ready to give up your fears? Are you ready to be more committed to your success and potential than you are to your limiting beliefs? Most people spend their entire lives playing it small. It’s a choice they’re making only they may not even know it. Now you know what your options are. Which choice will you make?
