Have you ever noticed how when you talk with someone by phone either for business or personally before you meet that you have expectations of what they will look like, and very rarely to they match reality! It often feels strange when you do meet as the voice is almost disembodied not seeming to belong to the face in front of you. It is one of the reasons I am such a big fan of audio on my website so that my face and voice will match with clients and audiences alike. It is also why many of us can’t stand how we sound on tape as it doesn’t match our own auditory internal experience of ourselves, but in fact it is how we sound to others.
Do you think if you heard Mick Jagger and never saw him, you would pair his voice and face? What about Madonna? (I always think her speaking voice fits but not her singing.) It is kind of like in the movies when an actor or actress takes on a unique role and they suddenly speak with an accent they never had before. It takes awhile to adjust the old face to the new voice.
