Who Are the Cookies in Your Life?

The best way to eat an oreo cookie is always by going for the middle first and saving the chocolate cookies for last. The middle is the sweet stuff, the yummy filling and that’s a lot like people. No, I’m not talking about cannibals! What I mean is that the best part of a person isn’t the chocolate cookie we see on the outside, but instead the rich filling they have on the inside. That’s where there true value lies and the best part of getting to know someone is getting to know theirĀ  filling, their heart, their soul, their core values and beliefs.

Sugar Cookie People
In life though, not everyone is an oreo. Not everyone has that sweet stuff in the middle. Sometimes someone is a sugar cookie with the best of what they offer just sprinkled around the outside and not much substance on the inside.Think for just a minute about the sugar cookies you’ve known or still know. These are often “keep up with the Jones” types who base their life on how much they can own and show off rather than how they can give and make a difference.

Chocolate Chippers
Other people are chocolate chip cookies, with or without walnuts, with their best bits sprinkled around so you get goodness in every experience from them. Oh and you might not even like chocolate chip cookies (is that possible?) Because the cool part about life is there are plenty of cookie types to go around and the same goes for types of people.Who do you know that’s a chocolate chipper?

The oatmeal raisin types are down to earth, well grounded, solid people that provide wholesome goodness in every exchange. These people are the friends and family we look too when we need comfort and reliability. There is a wholesome goodness about oatmeal raisin people with just enough sugar thrown in to keep you coming back, but not so much that you don’t want more. Are you an oatmeal raisin type of person?

Neiman Marcus Cookie People
These are the drama kings and queens in life. They’ve got a ton going on inside and outside and can be alternatively delicious and way too much. You may have an addiction to Neiman Marcus Cookies and that isn’t very healthy. These people tend to spend a lot of time in crisis and victim thinking, loading themselves with past and current woes, unable to let go of what doesn’t serve them and move forward to a simpler, more flavorful, less overwhelming existence. Got any Neiman Marcus Cookie people in your life?

Finding the Best Cookies for You
The key when you meet people and start to get to know them is to decide what kind of cookie they are and if that is a type you find delicious or prefer to leave on the plate of life. You get to choose what kind of cookies you want to enjoy in your life and that means what kind of people. Sometimes you’ll give someone a try, kind of like that bite of a cookie and find out that they aren’t all that and put them back. Other times the experience will be very tasty and you’ll look forward to more.

Be careful about judging a cookie by it’s appearance, just like people, the best often lies beneath the surface (unless of course, it is a sugar cookie type!)

  1. Hey Melissa!

Loved your cookie analogy. I think I’m an Oreo with Oatmeal Raisin rising :) and try to steer clear of the Neiman Marcus types…

Ironically, I used to supply the desserts for NM in northern California so that part was pretty funny. Cookie drama = good. People drama = not good.

    Cheers,

    Brenda

    Hey Brenda,

That’s too funny that you used to supply desserts to NM.

Wow, oreo with oatmeal raisin, sounds like you are one powerful cookie!

    Hi Melissa,

Thanks, as always, for the hug.

I’m afraid we don’t have the Neiman Marcus variety up here (Ontario Canada). When I go down to Santa Barbara to visit my Sister I must check them out.

I have a thing for peanut butter cookies. I wonder how you would describe that.

I was interested in your cookie analogies. Although I don’t know you personally, from your writing and your photo I would say you are beautiful inside and out. I am involved with a Company, (Vitamark) that concentrates quite heavily on Color Characterization. I am somewhat new and am in the throws of learning the system, but a lot of people are sold on it.

Glad to hear your friend is getting better.

    Warm regards,

    Wally

    Hey Wally,

Great to hear from you. Not familiar with Vitamark, but I teach color psychology and know it makes a difference when we dress as our cookies! LOL

Great analogy – who cannot relate to cookies?!! I suspect I’m very much like my favourite, Lemon-Poppy Seed. The lemon, at first taste, is tart, but it neutralizes acid and can be refreshing, as long as there’s not too much sugar involved. The poppy seeds? You get lots of tiny seeds with every bite, even though you may not pay much attention to them. Other times, some of those little beggars can get between your teeth and demand your attention. Or so I like to think! :)

    Victoria,

That was a gorgeous analogy!! Truly delicious thank you for sharing, I’ll incorporate that in a future in depth post dedicated to one of a kind cookies! You are.

  5. Hi Melissa,

Fun article. Thanks for sharing it.

I may be something between oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip. I do know there are definitely some nuts in there too, lol!

I see your point. We should always have some substance to offer others. I love this.

    Many hugs.

    Hello Melissa,

It was nice receiving an email that addresses one of the issues that all marketers face! Myself I am an Oatmeal Raisin Cookie! Do I have a large following yet? NO! Do I care about a large following NO! I would much rather have 5 quality people that I can give True quality advice & tips to that will rocket their business, rather than concentrating on my numbers. ~~Magical Marilyn~~

    Hey Marilyn,

I agree and got bemused when I got an auto DM on Twitter just today telling me that person was all about getting big numbers. He just doesn’t get it!

    You do.

  7. Love this! Love you! Love cookies!

It’s important to remember to that you might think you are one kind of cookie while you are coming across as another kind of cookie. Can you tell I just finished a personal branding class? I know many people who think they are oatmeal, but are sugar through and through. Ask the top 20% of your clients and the top 20% of your network what kind of cookie they think you are? It might prove to be enlightening.

Going to get some Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies now. :)

    Ahh yes Nora,

And the good news is you can rebake yourself anytime you want to!

Thin mints are a favorite, lol.
