As many people who are connecting to me online, I am making an effort to get to know them each, even just a little bit. What does that look like? It means that each time someone follows me on Twitter; I not only follow them back but first read their profile, check their website and make a personal comment. I do the same with requests to connect on Plaxo, Facebook, Linked In and Ecademy. Yes, it does take time but the benefits are quite worth it. By finding out what each person does, what their priorities are, and what kind of connections they are seeking, I can be of greater service to each one and by serving them I know that they will do the same for me.
Networking, online or off, is all about reciprocity. It is about seeing how you can serve first so that when the time comes, you will have many others ready to serve you. We all know those who operate from a standpoint of WIFM, “what’s-in-it-for-me,” and we quickly tired of their attentions and their draining behavior. Focus on being as Bob Burg calls it “a Go Giver.” Give first and watch your life and success expand.
